On the occasion of International Children’s Day, the Estonian Union of Large Families, Apollo, and Rocca al Mare Centre invite people to donate children’s books to large families. Donations can be brought until 31 May to the Apollo bookstore located on the second floor of Rocca al Mare Centre.
The organizers of the charity campaign encourage people to review their bookshelves during their spring cleaning. Many homes contain books that children have outgrown or duplicate copies that are no longer needed. The goal of the campaign is to give these books a new life in a new family and in the hands of new young readers.
“Children’s literature and books play an important role in a child’s development, in shaping imagination, and in creating shared family moments. There can never be too many books, especially in families with many curious children,” commented the initiator of the campaign, Rocca al Mare Head of Asset Management Helina Leif.
Kristi Juhandi, Head of Apollo Stores, confirmed that the company supports the charitable initiative and will also contribute a selection of children’s books to ensure that the collected books include even more diverse titles for children of different ages.
“A book remains one of the most valuable gifts you can give a child. Many of us remember the special feeling from childhood when a children’s book transported us into its own world — making us empathize, dream, and feel that anything is possible. Through this initiative, we help quality children’s books reach new readers and bring the joy of reading to families who need it most. Book circulation has become increasingly popular in Estonia, and targeted charity campaigns like this help ensure that books find their way to the children who need them the most,” said Kristi Juhandi.
“In large families, there are already many everyday expenses, and books are one of those things children constantly need more of — whether for bedtime stories, school reading, or the joy of discovering new adventures. Donating a children’s book in good condition is a simple yet heartfelt way to support families,” noted Raili Maasing, President of the Estonian Union of Large Families, who also expressed advance gratitude to all donors.
On 31 May, Rocca al Mare Centre will also host a major International Children’s Day family event featuring activities for the whole family. The program includes activities from the zoo and open-air museum, a reading corner by Nurmenuku Library, children’s theatre, a treasure hunt, Nerf laser games, an animation workshop, a children’s fashion show, activities by the Police and Border Guard Board and the Rescue Board, and plenty of ice cream. All activities are free for families.
“Rocca al Mare has always been a family-friendly centre, and supporting families is part of our everyday work. Throughout the year, we organize numerous free family events, and over the next two weeks we encourage visitors to bring along a children’s book they no longer use at home. That way, another child can enjoy it,” added Helina Leif.
Children’s books can be donated until 31 May (inclusive) by bringing them to the checkout counter of the Apollo bookstore located on the second floor of Rocca al Mare Centre. The collected books will be handed over to the Estonian Union of Large Families on International Children’s Day, 1 June.
